- The Jatiya Mahasabha passes resolutions calling the Government of India to initiate talks with ULFA and calling ULFA to abjure violence, among others. (AT)

- The two-day Jatiya Mahasabha, organized by AJYCP got underway to discuss the situation in Assam after the bomb blasts in Dhemaji. Most speakers are demanding talks between the government and ULFA. (Day 1: AT, PD)
- The Home and Defence Ministries have decided to establish a unified command council in Manipur with the Chief Minister at the head in wake of the Apunba Lup led agitation. A politico-military arrangement, Assam and Kashmir have a similar structures. (TC)

- Apunba Lup is critical of the Indian Army Chief's assertion that Thangjam Manorama was not raped, especially since the matter was under investigation and also sub-judice (TC).

- Indian Cabinet approve an ordinance to remove POTA, but with the assurance that some of the provisions will be transferred to the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. BJP governments in Gujarat and Jharkhand decide to enact their own anti-terror laws. (FE, HT)
- Apunba Lup, the umbrella organization of 32 different organizations protesting the AFSPA in Manipur, announced a 16-day road block starting September 19.

- Wife and brother-in-law of Tezpur MP, Mani Kumar Subba, were arrested in connection with the murder of Subba's personal assistant, Milan Subba,(Hindu)
- The AGP central executive committee has ratified the decision to bar Prafulla Mahanta from holding offices for "lowering the image of the regional party". This probably is the beginning of a split in the party. (Hindu, TC)
- AASU alleges that the Central Government does not consider the north eastern region a part of India and announces an agitational program. (AT)

- A two-day conference "Towards a New Asia: Transnationalism and Northeast India", organised by the Centre for Northeast India, South and Southeast Asia Studies (CENISEAS) refocussed on the issues of northeast India. (AT)
- The Karbi Longri North Cachar Hills Liberation Front and its parent organization United PeopleÃ?¢ââ??‰â??¢s Democratic Solidarity declare war on each other, raising the possibility of a bloodbath in the Karbi and North Cachar Hills. (TC)

- NSCN(IM) has issued an advertisement in the Nagaland Post for the posts of undersecretary, section officers and assistant section officer. This is probably the first time a separatist organization has advertised its vacancies openly in a newspaper, pointing to the possibility that the NSCN(IM) runs a parallel government in Nagaland. - A U.S delegation of tea importers and enthusiasts is visiting Assam for three days to examine the marketibility of Assam Tea as a brand name.
- Milan Subba, the personal secretary of Mani Kumar Subba, member of Lok Sabha from Tezpur was found murdered in the MP's Delhi farmhouse. The MP's brother-in-law and two security guards are absconding.

- For the first time in the 56-year old history of the Gauhati University, a 10-hr bandh was observed by the faculty, staff and employees against the management's inaction on financial irregularities.
- Eight ULFA members were found killed in a mysterious incident in a jungle village in West Garo Hills near Tikrikilla.
