Sanskrit has been the primary language for epigraphy in Assam especially in the pre-Ahom period. The earliest eveidence of Sanskrit comes from the Umachal rock inscriptions of Surendravarman in the fifth century. Sanskrit found favor once again with the later Ahom Swargadeos.

Two important compositions in Sanskrit from the region are the Kalika Purana and the Yogini Tantra
