Origin of Assam

From WikiAssam

The origin of the word Assam is not clear. There are a number of theories but none of them are fully satisfactory explanations.

One view is that the word is derived from the Sanskrit word asama, meaning uneven. Since the region is full of mountains, and the plains dotted with hills, this might sound like a likely origin.

Another view traces the origin of the name to the Ahoms. It is claimed that the word appeared only after the advent of the Ahoms. The Koch bansabali and Srimanta Sankardev in one of his works refer to the Ahoms and not the land by the word Asam. This is given as evidence to support this view.
