Hiteswar Saikia

Hiteswar Saikia (-1996) was a controversial politician who became the Chief Minister of Assam a couple of times.

Hiteswar Saikia was elected to the Assam Assembly for the first time in 1972. He held many ministerial positions in the Assam Government.

Hiteswar Saikia was known as a cunning politician who was ruthless and cleverly used the "Divide and Rule" policy to remain in power. He also took many decisions during his tenure as the Chief Minister that were considered detrimental to the interests of Assam, particularly the Assamese-speaking people.

Hiteswar Saikia was the Chief Minister of Assam 1) from February 27, 1983 to December 23, 1985, and 2) from June 30, 1991 to April 22, 1996.

Hiteswar Saikia died on April 22, 1996.
