Guwahati
From WikiAssam
The city of Guwahati (Guwaahaati, Gauhati) in Assam is often called the gateway to North East India, named after the betel nut. Another city named after the betel nut is Penang in Malaysia, the second largest city in that country.
[edit]
Origin
The name comes from two words guwa (areca nut) and haat (market place). Some claim it is the city Pragjyotishpur mentioned in the epics, though there exists no evidence to incontrovertibly prove it. Nevertheless, if the name itself comes from a marketplace, then it must have been a very small area that grew over time to now subsume many other historical places.
