From WikiAssam

Assam is a northeastern state of India. The political boundaries of Assam have changed many times in historical and more recent times. The region was known by other names in the past (Pragjyotishpur, Kamarupa), and the origin of the word Assam is not clear.

The region of Assam today can be divided into three geographical regions. Two river valley systems, belonging to the Brahmaputra and the Barak rivers, separated by a mountainous region, the Karbi Plateau.
