Suryya Kumar Bhuyan was one of a few brilliant individuals whose untiring research and voluminous publications on various aspects of Assamese language and literature led to the acceptance of Assamese as an independent language with a rich and acclaimed history of writing spanning several centuries.

Biography

Dr. Surjyakumar Bhuyan was born on the 27th of January, 1892, in the town of Nagaon. His father's name was Rabilal and mother's name was Bhubaneswari.

Work

Suryya Kumar Bhuyan was an historian and author of many historical books on Assam. Although he started his writing career by dabbling in poetry, soon he forayed into the realm of history and history of literature. Suryya Kumar Bhuyan established the "Culture Research Center" at Gauhati University.

Assam has had a very rich tradition of writing on bark ("xa~si paat") for many centuries. Authors in monasteries continued writing on bark till the late part of the 19th Century. Suryya Kumar Bhuyan traveled all over Assam for many years and single-handedly, collected more than 2500 such hand-written books or manuscripts. They are preserved in the Assam Museum in Guwahati and at the Library of Gauhati University.

Suryya Kumar Bhuyan was also known as a biographer, brilliant essayist and columnist of repute.
