Script
The Assamese script is a standardized version of the paleographic script that developed in east India, the roots of which could be found in the Brahmi script. Its immediate predecessor is the Nagari script, a descendent of the Gupta script. According to Mahendra Bora [Bora81], at the time the first Assamese book was being printed, there were three styles of Assamese script: Gargayan, Bamuniya and Kaitheli. But for printing, the extant Bengali lithotype, which was very similar to the three styles, was adopted by adding two more letters: the ra and the va. This then became the standard Assamese script.
