Periplus of the Erythraean Seas

Erythraean Seas was the Gulf of Aden, Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean to the ancient geographers. The Periplus maris Erythraei is the guidebook to the Erythraean Seas and the land beyond written in the first century AD. The ships docked at Barygaza in present-day Gujarat, and the description of the trade route continues along the Ganges and stops either in or close to Assam, where, it is mentioned, the goods that come in consisted mostly of silk. Thus the old Southern Silk Route probably passed through Assam or northeast India at least.
