AGP

From WikiAssam

AGP or Asom Gana Parishad is a political party that was formally launched on October 14, 1985 by the leaders of the AASU, AAGSP and others who led the Anti-Foreigner Movement. The AAGSP was disbanded, and the leaders of the AASU resigned from the student organization.

The founder president and general-secretary were the erstwhile president and general secretary of AASU, Prafulla Mahanta and Bhrigu Phukan. The AGP came to power in Assam in 1985 and again in 1996.

Soon after coming to power in 1985, two power centers developed under Prafulla Mahanta (Chief Minister) and Bhrigu Phukan (Home Minister). After the first Mahanta government was dismissed by the President of India in 1990, the party split in 1991. Bhrigu Phukan and others formed an alternative party Natun Asom Gana Parishad (NAGP). NAGP later joined the NCP and finally Bhrigu Phukan returned to AGP in 2004.

In 2003, Prafulla Mahanta had to resign as the president due to a personal controversy, and Brindabon Goswami became the president. The ensuing power shift is shaking the party, raising the possibilty of yet another split.
