- AGP government led by Prafulla Mahanta dismissed by Chandra Shekhar government, supported by Rajiv Gandhi led Rajiv Gandhi. President's rule imposed. Governor, D. D. Thakur becomes the chief administrator of Assam.
- ULFA banned and Operation Bajrang by the Indian Army and other security agencies begun against it.
